 Southwest Montana Trails

Southwest Montana is a big place, with lots of space, lots of different land managers, and thousands of miles of trails that are bike-accessible. We think we have the best trails in the world, we may be a bit biased though. We hope that the info here will help you find the kind of trail you’re here to ride. We are the regional Administrators for Trailforks, and we do our best to keep things up to date and add info whenever we can.

  1. Download Trailforks to your phone by clicking the Trailforks Logo to the left

  2. Download the Montana trail map

  3. You can use Airplane mode if you allow Trailforks to utilize your location when using the app, and you’ll still be able to use the maps within Montana.

  4. Go ride your bike!

 Shoulder Season Rides

Early and Late season in Montana can see temperatures ranging from 20 below to over 100F, weather from hail and thunderstorms to snow squalls. Trail conditions can vary in quality on a minute-to-minute basis and you could be riding on dusty moon dust one minute and slogging through the world’s worst mud the next. We recommend that you check the weather forecast before you ride, but generally these trails are pretty good to go as long as the roads are clear.

 Flow Trails

Flow trails are designed to make you smile, they take all the best features you know and love and make them accessible to everyone. Flow trails here in our region have berms, jumps, rollers, table tops, and much more. You should be able to roll down a flow trail with little use of your pedals or brakes, let gravity do the work! The below trails offer the best flow in Southwestern Montana, they are ordered by difficulty, green at the top, black diamond at the bottom.

 Big Shuttles

Shuttle rides can be tons of fun, we know this more than most. While we don’t have anything like the Whole Enchilada or Wasatch Crest, we do have some truly unique shuttle opportunities. The below are just a few, we like to keep these a bit more secret, so instead, join SWMMBA and join us on a group ride sometime.

 After Work Rides

These rides are generally easy to access from town, offer a shorter ride that you can complete just after work or as part of a multi-trail weekend day. They aren’t especially challenging and don’t require you to plan ahead all that much. Just get your bike and ride!

 Backcountry

These rides will test your ability both physically and logistically. They are BIG, pack food, water, and bear spray because you’re going to be really out there. We also suggest bringing a buddy, as these trails are best shared. Plan ahead and check the weather! There’s nothing worse than having to bivy without a sleeping bag in the backcountry because you got rained on for an hour and the trail is impassable.
