How to Turn a Town Into a Home

Sam out front on a Bangtail group ride.

SWMMBA has a lot of members—1,555 to be exact—and they all contribute to the growth and development of southwest Montana’s mountain-bike community in their own ways. Some dig trails, some raise cash, and some cook tacos. Some, like Sam Rochelle, give their time week in and week out all summer long, on dig days, group rides, and community events.

Before the riding season gets going in earnest, we caught up with Sam and asked him why he supports SWMMBA in so many ways. Here’s what he said:

How long have you been volunteering with SWMMBA and what inspired you to get involved?
I have been volunteering with SWMMBA for about three years now.  I started volunteering when I moved to Bozeman as a way of meeting the local biking community.

Why do you think membership is important and how would you encourage other folks to get involved?
SWMMBA membership is a wonderful way to become a part of the greater Bozeman biking community.  Fortunately, joining isn’t hard, all you need to do is come out and help with some trail work events.  Better yet, those events are an excellent opportunity to do some good while getting outside, getting exercise, and hanging out with awesome people!

What is your favorite trail to ride in the region?
Picking a favorite trail is hard. My favorite part about mountain biking is the exploratory aspect. So instead of a favorite trail, I will respond with a favorite SWMMBA event—the Lionhead Weekend! I love getting the big crew together to camp out and fix up many miles of majestic and remote mountain trails!

What do you want to see the mountain-bike community do more of in 2020?
Let’s improve more trails! I am particularly excited to take advantage of our long summer days and have more regular evening trail work events!

What does stewardship mean to you?
I think stewardship through involvement in community organizations like SWMMBA is a great way to turn a town from a place where you live to a home. In addition to helping me meet some great people and giving me the opportunity to attend some fun events, working on local trails has really given me a sense of ownership and pride in our little piece of mountain paradise.

Sincerely,
Sam

As we get ready to launch into another busy trail season, it’s inspiring to know Sam will be with us, raking corners, fixing ruts, and looking forward to the next big adventure.

We encourage you to join us if you haven’t already. Like Sam said, it’s easy.
